From “Always Caring” to Building Futures, Sparx Announces New Venture in Support of United Helpers
With a network of caring that reaches nearly 1,000 people each day, United Helpers announces its latest venture, Sparx Construction and General Contracting, a for-profit commercial and residential construction company created with the goal of generating revenue to continue supporting the United Helpers mission of “Always Caring.”
United Helpers Chief Operating Officer Stacey Cannizzo explained that Sparx was created in 2012 to meet a need within the community. Smaller organizations in the area were asking for services such as financial, IT, and office management. By utilizing internal expertise, Sparx has continued to grow and find opportunities in support of the United Helpers organization.
“The North Country is home to many amazing contractors, but anyone who has tried to hire a contractor in recent years knows there is far more work available than people to do it,” she said.
For nearly as long as anyone can remember, members of the United Helpers buildings and grounds team have worked on projects ranging from new roofing, kitchens, and bathrooms, to converting a former bank or warehouse into office space.
“We have always employed people who could do this work well,” Ms. Cannizzo said. “Through the creation of Sparx Construction and General Contracting, we are now offering these services to the community in a way that will allow us to generate revenue for the non-profit, health care side of our organization.”
One of the first major commercial projects for Sparx Construction and General Contracting will be the renovation of the former United Helpers Adult Home in Ogdensburg into “market rate” apartments.
“There are few properties anywhere in the area offering views that can compete with what we will have once that property is complete,” Ms. Cannizzo said.
Revenue from Sparx Construction and General Contracting will support United Helpers and help fill gaps in the organization’s budget created by stagnant government reimbursement rates.
